511 is a one-stop web source for up-to-the-minute Bay Area traffic, transit, rideshare, and bicycling information. 511 is managed by a partnership of public agencies led by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the California Highway Patrol, and the California Department of Transportation. 511’s mission is to provide comprehensive, accurate, reliable and useful multimodal travel information to meet the needs of Bay Area travelers.

problem

To update the traffic.511.org site and create a simple, intuitive user experience so people can get all the traffic information they need quickly. There were three primary objectives: simplify the Drive Times tool, incorporate MY511 personalized data, and simplify the overall UI/UX.

solution

Project6 Design led MTC and SAIC through an extensive process that started with wireframes outlining every feature of the revised site. Special planning was taken to make the user experience the same if the user was interacting with the map or with the text-based side of the page, especially for the trip planning functions. A large additional effort was to redesign the base map. The map uses several different zoom levels, so all features (text, regions, colors, borders, etc.) needed to be identified at each level. The base map design had to be clear enough by itself, but also allow for trip route lines, traffic condition colors, and multiple icons on the screen at the same time. Project6 designed all of the new icons: from highway shields to incident icons to work in a cohesive way with the new user interface.

Results

The website allows the user to quickly plan a trip within the Bay Area - eliminating several time-consuming steps from the pervious version. It also allows users to register, view camera data and previous trips without leaving the page.

Project6 Design won two 2011 Silver W3 Awards and four 2011 Silver Davey Awards from the International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA) for excellence in its web design and build projects and print design. The design firm was recognized for the outstanding user interface and design work they did while modernizing web sites for two prestigious California Universities, the University of California San Francisco’s School of Dentistry and the Cal Maritime Academy, as well as for an industry leading design-build construction firm, Pankow. The design agency also received an award for their print brochure design for the Save the Redwoods League “Redwoods and Climate Change Initiative”.

The International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), which sponsors both the W³ Awards and the Davey Awards, is an organization consisting of top-tier media, advertising, and marketing professionals from the world’s leading organizations and firms.
The Davey Awards honors the “Davids” of creativity — the smaller agencies, companies, or organizations with annual billings or revenues below certain levels. Each year, the Davey Awards honor winners who derive their strength from big ideas, rather than big budgets.
The W³ Awards honor creative excellence on the Web, and recognize the creative and marketing professionals behind award-winning websites, web video and online marketing programs.
The UCSF School of Dentistry web site is built with the Drupal content management system (CMS); the most widely supported open-source CMS available. Drupal is used by the White House and several other high-profile organizations. The CMS allows the UCSF School of Dentistry team to add, edit or delete web site content quickly and easily.
The Pankow site was built into the Sitefinity content management system, providing a .NET CMS solution that was easy for the Pankow staff to maintain. The CMS also allows the marketing team to login and quickly update any part of the website. Most importantly, the site reflects their true brand attributes: integrity, collaboration, and innovation.

eBay Classifieds is a free local classifieds website for your community. With a focus on ease of use, Project6 redesigned the user interface, website design and all the front-end xhtml + css.

problem

eBay had high expectations with very tight deadlines to re-design and develop the North American classifieds website (formerly named Kijiji).

solution

Project6 began the process working from usability studies and research on the target market. Once the brand direction was set and the hierarchy with eBay.com established, P6 began the wireframing process. Project6 created 15 wireframes, several with A/B variations for impromptu user feedback, before beginning the website design process.

results

Within just a few weeks, Project6 had re-branded and designed the master template page types for eBay. After the coding was completed in-house (W3C compliant xHTML code), P6 served as liaison during the integration process assisting the eBay engineers to bring the site to life.

Even the "Page not found" page was designed to integrate the character of the site.

California HealthCare Foundation gets a complete overhaul of their website. Project6 redesigned the site to better reflect the driving factors of the Foundation. The new site architecture focuses on simplicity: Who We Are, What We Do, and Browse. This revised user-friendly architecture makes finding content simple and engages their target market.

Goodwill 2010 Annual Report designed by Project6

Project6 designed the digital (and PDF) version of the 2010 Annual Report for Goodwill Industries. Goodwill did not want to waste paper and resources by physically printing Annual Reports this year. Opting for a digital version saved time, money and resources.

The new report is designed to highlight the nonprofit's three main focus areas: People, Planet and Performance. The microsite uses large images to feature the people and a dynamic way of having the content scroll on top of those images.

Branding, Print design and multi-lingual website development for SaaS Start-up

SaaS-based start-up Doxee looked to Project6 Design to create their new brand identity. P6 created the brand, print design and digital presence. The website was created in Drupal (open-source, LAMP based CMS) and allowed for a multi-lingual site. The website is currently in Czech and English.
